Wise and Foolish Builders

The parable of the wise and foolish builders is a teaching from the end of the Sermon on the Mount. It is a parable about two different builders.  Both choose to build a house (a life), but they choose different places or foundations in which to build.  The wise man chooses the strong foundation of the rock.  It’s solid, strong, faithful, and true. It’s a foundation build on Christ, the solid rock.

In contrast, the foolish man just builds in a convenient, easy place that suits his fancy.  His foundation is basically non-existent. This is not because he hasn’t heard how to do it right, but instead because he is either too careless or indifferent.

Coming Storms

Storms come as storms always will.  The same types of storms hit both houses because storms hit the wise as much as they hit the foolish.  And yet, the end result is vastly different.

The house (life) of the wise stands because he built on the foundation of the Lord and His Word.  Whereas the fall of the house of the foolish is great.  It had no foundation. There was no way it could have survived. He did this to himself because He ignored God’s warnings.

This is a very good reminder that our lives should be built on the solid foundation of the Lord and His Word. We have the truth provided in God’s Word.  We must have the Solid Rock of Christ as our foundation.

Matthew 7:24-27

24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

Luke 6:47-49

47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. 49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.
