Don't Hide Your Light

Remember, parables are teachings about common, well-known concepts alongside a new spiritual lesson.  Three of the four Gospels mention this parable. Here, the message is much more obvious than many other parables. No one lights a lamp or candle and places it under a bushel basket or under a bed. You don’t hide your light. Hence the lamp is placed in a prominent place for all to see and benefit from the light such as on a candle stick or a lampstand.

Luke gives even more clarity to the purpose. It is to give light to those who enter the house. Jesus is giving the message to the disciples that they are called to shine the light of the Word for others.

Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Mark 4:21-22

Also He said to them, “Is a lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed? Is it not to be set on a lampstand? 22 For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light.

Luke 8:16

No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but sets it on a lampstand, that those who enter may see the light.
