Hope for the Helpless October 25

Hope for the Helpless

Are we Actually Helpless?

Well, “yes” and “no” to this question. Of course, most adults are quite capable of working or going to school, or taking care of a family, and doing all of the things that productive adults do. At any rate, we are not helpless in that way. However, we are certainly quite helpless when it comes to fixing the state of our souls. Thus, Christ becomes the hope for the helpless.

Therefore, we are not people with a few problems that we can fix up easily a little bit here and there. In short, we are at odds with God deep down in our very souls,  and furthermore, we also are not able to fix the problem on our own.

Romans 3:23 states “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” That is why we call Christ “the Savior” because we are not able to help ourselves in this way. When we have our hope in a Savior, He is able to fix our broken condition (our relationship with Him).

John 3:16 states:

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” The gift of God’s Son given out of love for us is the emphasis of this verse.  In response, our only job is to believe. We are not told to try to solve the condition of our own soul, but instead to believe in and accept Christ’s work on the cross for our everlasting life. Indeed, He is the hope for the helpless.

Romans 10:9-10, 13

“That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.”

“For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” This is true hope for the helpless.

Why are All People Helpless to Save their Own Souls ?

Romans 3:10-12, 23

“As it is written:

“There is none righteous, no, not one;
11 There is none who understands;
There is none who seeks after God.
12 They have all turned aside;
They have together become unprofitable;
There is none who does good, no, not one.

23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Sin entered the World Through Adam’s Sin

Romans 5:12

“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men because all sinned—”

God Demonstrates His Love to Us

Romans 5:8

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 5:1

“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Romans 8:1

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”

 Romans 10:9-10, 13

“That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.”

“For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

And so, the Lord becomes the hope for the helpless.

Psalm 33:21-22

For our heart shall rejoice in Him,
Because we have trusted in His holy name. Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us. Just as we hope in You.

Psalm 39:7

And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You.

Psalm 38:15

For in You, O Lord, I Hope; You will hear, O Lord my God.

Proverbs 23:18

Surely there is a future,
And your hope will not be cut off.
